State registries under the 1894 Hungarian act

The Law on State Registers (Article XXXIII) introducing mandatory state registries in Hungary came into force on December 18, 1894. According to Paragraph 20, all registrations were made exclusively in the official (Hungarian) language.

In the following year an order was issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs regulating the manner of registering non-Hungarian baptized names, i.e. the method of translating names. Following the amendment of the law in 1904, a new ministerial order was issued in 1906, according to which non-translated names can be entered in the original form while, in the case of already translated names, the original form shall be written in brackets.
